Early Orbik History  in Tajno and Augustow

1680s- 1690s

According to royal population registers, completed after the devastation of the Swedish War (1655-1656),  the Orbiks appeared in the area sometime between 1665 and 1674. A personal examination of the detailed population registers in the Archive of Ancient Documents (AGAD) in Warsaw, does not reveal any Orbik member in the all the villages of Barglow Koscielny in 1665. Nor do Orbiks appear in the Church records during this time. The first Orbik to appear in any documents is a Walenty Orbik and wife, in the 1674 population census. But Walenty Orbik was not living in the villages of Barglow Koscielny parish, but he was listed as living in Augustow. Records do not indicate where the new immigrants came from.

In the year 1698, the following Orbiks appear in the records as owning quarter wloks of land:

  1. Jakub Orbik renting a quarter of wlok, second one remaining empty.

  2. Jozefa Orbikowa, renting a quarter of wlok, second one remaining empty. Potocki Archives Page 96

  3. Piotr Orbik, renting a quarter of wlok, second one remaining empty.

  4. Thomas Orbik, renting a quarter of wlok, second one remaining empty.

  5. The widow Wojciechowa Orbikowa, renting a quarter of wlok, second one remaining empty. Potocki Archives Page 94

We see from these records that it was permissible in this area for not only commoners to own land but for women to own land too. At least in this particular part of Podlasia.

Parish Records from Barglow Koscielny also show Orbiks starting in 1680.

In the 1680s and 90s, there were 5 adult Orbiks in Barglow Koscielny parish, all in Tayno: Tomas Orbik, Andreas Orbik, Jakob Orbik, Albertus Orbik, and Anna Orbik.
