Alcohol Production and Distribution in Bargłów-Kościelny and Surrounding Parishes

Whether someone was literate or not, for the purpose of this list, are those who had signed a metrical document in parish records.

Karczemny Arendarz. Leaseholds of the Inn.

All of these that were listed in Bargłów-Kościelny records were literate and all but one were Jewish. Below is a list of those, including their ages, location of the inn, and date first listed: Mortajowicy Moszkowicz, 47, Augustów (1810), Eliasz Moszkowicz, 65, Żarnowo (1810), Szmojło Berkowicz, Turczynowo in Rajgród parish (1810), Idzko Smerkowicz, 56, Kamionka (1810), Abram Ajzykowicz, 45, Grabowo (1810), Szlomko Joskowicz, 40, Odłogi (1810), Abram Ankiel Berkowicz, 30, Kamionka (1810), Herszk Joskowicz, 31, Brzozowka, (1811), Chaskiel Lejzorowicz, 50, Kamionka (1811), Jan Wysocki, 35, Borsuki (1812), Idzko Smerkowicz, 50, Kamionka (1813), Josko Monkowicz, 32, Kamionka (1813), and Sejko Joskowicz (53) Kroszówki (1819). Judging from the number of inns in Kamionka, it seems like this was a real party town.

In 1815, the Russian Government issued a formal ban on Jewish Innkeepers, distillers, and merchants.

After 1815, the term karczmarz began being used in records and by 1819, the term karczemny arendarz fell from use. Of the 14 karczmarz listed between 1815-1860, all were Christian but only three were literate. The litterates were: Jan Wysocki, Jeziorki (1815), Syzmon Kulesza, Barglowka (1815), and Gotlieb Malinka, Rutki Nowe (1819). The rest were illiterate. They were: Matys Iberard, Jeziorki (1815), Andrzej Kletotka, Rutki Nowe (1819), Franciszek Zalewski, Barglowka (1819), Jan Eberhart, Kamionka (1821), Andrzej Kierstynowski, Jeziorki (1828), Bogomił Kielerd, Orzechówka (1838), Jan Karp, Barglów-Kościelny (1838), Gotlieb Kryspin, Grabowo (1841), Franciszek Ossewski, Kamionka (1842), Jan Duba, 40, Rutki Nowe (1843), and Karol Gross, Netta (1860).

From 1808 to 1899, there were 61 people listed as szynkarz. The first three, from 1808 to 1813 were Jewish and literate. Out of the remaining 58, only 11 were literate. Those literates were: Josko Mordechai Dawidowicz, 47, Rutki (1808), Jasko Zorkowicz, Wólka (1809), Dawid Lejzorowicz, 25, Netta, (1813), Krystian Hartwich, Tajenko, (1833), Maciej Sobolewski, 46, Tajenko (1852), Wincenty Skorupa, Grabowo (1854), Ferdynand Michałski, Rutki Stary (1856), Antoni Spiński, Sosnowo (1857), Wojciech Zajko, Bargłów-Kościelny (1857), Franciszek Gross, Netta (1859), Bartlomiej Zalewski, Bargłów Dworny (1861), Jan Wróbel, Szynkarz Bargłów-Kościelny (1861), Ludwik Świerkowski, Netta (1863), and Grzegorz Więckowski, Kamionka (1863).

Of the distillers, gorzelny/gorzelnik, those literate were: Marcin Kaupe, Pruska (1843), Jozef Gulski, Netta (1844), Franciszek Kosskowski, Netta Dwór/Folwark (1854). The illiterates were were: Adam Talmandt, 40, Bargłówka (1848) and Frederyk Kossakowski, Netta Folwark (1853).  

Of the piwowar, brewers, both were literate. Jozef Gulski, Netta (1844) and Stanislaw Kucharski, Netta Folwark, (1861). 

Of the wine merchants, winnik, all were literate. Chaskiel Mejerowicz, Kamionka (1811), Judko Choćkielowicz, 28, Augustów (1812), Choćkiel Abramowicz, Netta (1812), Wolf Idzkowicz, Tajno (1812), Jerszko Sendrowicz, Winnik in  Kroszówka (1819). After 1819, no more wine merchants were mentioned in this parish.

Finally, between 1809 and 1825, there were five liquor merchants, propinator, mentioned. Of these, two were from Rajgród and were Jewish, both in 1825, and the other three were Christian- Four were literate. They were Matys Ibert, protestant, 41, Jeziorki, (1809), Matys Motul, protestant, 26. Kamionka, (1809), Lejzor Jankielowicz Steinsaper , 40, Rajgród (1825), Mejer Lejbowicz Cukerbiker, 44, Rajgród, (1825). Ludwik Tomazewski, 23, Jaminy, (1842) was illiterate.
