Orpik and Orbik- Name Change in Osowy Grad

In the book Studia i Materialy Do Dziejow Pojezierza Augutsowiego (Bialystok, 1967), the author cites the development of the Augustów suburb of Osowy Grad. In this town he lists the families who appeared in this village in 1783 and 1792. This includes an Orbik family in both 1783 and 1792. Even though he lists this family as ORBIK in this book, church records from Augustow have marriage and birth records in the village of Osowy Grad which lists ORPIKS in the early 1800s. The ORPIK name shifted to the spelling ORBIK in 1822.

1783 Inventory of Osowy Grad

Despite the fact that Wisniewski stated that their names were ORBIK, this document (the one quoted in his article) shows that in the 1790s, this family was spelled ORPIK, which leads to a little more mystery. From CHAP-Wilno. Document and extracts below courtesy of Grzegorz Krupinski.

As of today, I still cannot connect the Orbiks in Osowy Grad to the Orbiks in Tajno even though the two villages are very close to one another.

1775 marriage in Lipowo, parish of Krasnybor of Jan Orpik and Helen Butkiewicz, widow. This may explain the stepson in the Osowy Grad listings.

Birth in 1779 of Agnieszka to Jan and Helen Orpik in Lebiedzin.

Birth in 1782 of Tekla to Jan and Helen Orpik in Lebiedzin.

1775 birth of Agatha, daughter of Franciszek Orpik and Anna Pużio of Trzyrzeczki (Three Rivers) in the parish of Dąbrowka Białystok. This is an interesting clue which deserves more research.

Birth in 1780 in Lebiedzin of Marianna, daughter of Ignaty Orpik and Teresa.

Birth in 1784 of Rozalia to Ignaty Orpik and Teresa in Lebiedzin.

There are many Orpik gravestones in the cemeteries of Dąbrowka Białystok parish, and the nearby parish of Różanystok (see notes below)

In 2007, while searching church records in Augustow church in Poland. I found evidence that this branch actually evolved from the name ORPIK.

Register of Inhabitants in Augustow 1800: Antoni, Marcin, and Marianna Orpik.

1801 Osowy Grad : Jan Orpik  syn, Helena Orpikowna

1802 Osowy Grad: Helena Orpikowna, Dawid Orpik

1803 : Jan  Orbik, Jan Orpik, Marianna Orpikowa, Marcin Orpik, Antoni  Orpik

1805 Osowy Grad: Jan Orpik, Daniel Orpik, Antoni Oprik

1815: Osowy Grad: Stanislaw Orbik, Joanna Orbikowa

In 1852, Jan Orbik, 80, church servant, son of deceased Jan Orbik and Helen Szumila, husband of Joanna Majewski died in Augustow. The death was announced by Teodor Szumila, 59, and Wawrzyniec Lipinski, 68, both church servants from Augustow. Jan Orbik's parents were undoubtedly the Jan Orbik and Helen mentioned in the 1790s and early 1800s records of Augustow.
