Czarny Families in South Chicago

There were several Czarny families that settled in Chicago. The two main areas were the steel production area in the neighborhood of South Chicago. The majority of the Czarnys settled in the meat-packing area in the neighborhood called "Back of the Yards" and in nearby Bridgeport.

20 May, 1895 marriage of Marianna Czarny and Michael Ulaszek in St. Michael's parish in South Chicago. They were both from Osobnica.

Michael  Ulaszek (born in 1863) immigrated to Chicago in 1891, and  in 1900 was living at 8331 Ontario with his wife Mary Czarny and his young family. Also living at this address was Sophia Czarny, Mary's sister. In the next building, 8317 Ontario, lived Jacub and Agatha Brangiel. Agatha was Mary's other sister. Michael Ulaszek worked for Illinois Steel as laborer. I

Michael Ulaszek and Marianna Czarna's children were:

  2. Anna Ulaszek (1898-1983) married Konstanty (Gus) Iwinski in 1924 in Chicago.

  3. Agnes (1900-1984), married Harry Orbik in 1924.

  4. Hedwig Ulaszek (1903-1903)

  5. Catherine (1905- ?), married Boleslaw (William) Pik in 1928 in Chicago.

  6. Andreas (1908-1908)

Agatha Czarny, born 27 May 1877 in Osobnica. Married Joseph Bragiel (Brągiel)on 23 Aug 1897 at St. Michaels' parish in South Chicago.

  1. Annie Brongel born 1899. Spelled like this on the 1900 census.

Sophia Czarny, born 1 Jan 1881 in Osobnica. Married Joseph Pieta (Pięta)on 20 Jan1902 at St. Peter and Paul parish in Chicago.

  1. John Pieta, born 1904.
  2. Frank Pieta, born 1907
  3. Catherine Pieta, born 1920.
  4. Hedwig, later Jennie Pienta, born  1912.
  5. Wojciech, later George F. Pienta, born 1915
  6. Frederick, later Fred A. Pienta, born 1919.

In 1920, they live at 1642 West 38th Place. 1930 they lived at 1639 West 38th Place in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.


Mary Czarny's Ancestors

 Marianna Czarna was the daughter of Martin Czarny and Anna Skiba, born in house number 273 in Osobnica, a village in the county of Jaslo, in the province of Rzeszow in present day south eastern Poland.

Martin Czarny's parents were Peter Czarny (born about 1818) and Marianna Lazar (born about 1820) is Osobnica. Anna Skiba's parents were Jan Skiba and Marianna Dybas.

The children of Martin Czarny and Anna Skiba were:

  1. Marianna Czarny, born 6 Jan 1875 in Osobnica. Married Michael Ulaszek on 20 May 1895 at St. Michaels' parish in South Chicago. These are my Great-Grandparents.
  2. Sophia Czarny, born 1 Jan 1881 in Osobnica. Married Joseph Pieta on 20 Jan1902 at St. Peter and Paul parish in Chicago.
  3. Agatha Czarny, born 27 May 1877 in Osobnica. Married Joseph Bragiel on 23 Aug 1897 at St. Michaels' parish in South Chicago
  4. Katarzyna Czarny born and died 1879 in Osobnica.
  5. Adalbert Czarny born and died 1881 in Osobnica.

Anna Skiba died in Osobnica on 5 Feb 1883. Her husband Martin Czarny married Apolonia Gliwa. They had one child:

  1. Adalbert (Wojciech) Czarny born 9 April 1890 in Osobnica. He married Wiktoria Budziak on 6 Feb 1911 at St. Peter and Paul parish in Chicago.
